No better news could have come for the Balinese than the launch of JetStar's new low cost flights from Australia starting November this year. Prices start at $524 + $283.61 tax, total $ 807.61 however from time to time there will be sale specials, check their site.
Whilst overall arrivals at Bali's airport have recovered, down 9% from the same time last year, the Balinese economy is suffering because the new arrivals from Asia only stay a few days. The Australians always generous, supported the Balinese

200% Occupancy
The KHO will be the envy of every hotel in Bali with 200% occupancy, it will be so nice to have friends staying again, just like the old days.
KHO Editorial
At the KHO we welcome Qantas' new JetStar LLC (Low Cost Carrier) However we must ask, is Qantas taking us for a ride again?. as they did with Australian Airlines, supposedly a LLC that just took over Qantas routes, with much the same fares. The low cost was to Qantas, by paying staff reduced wages, the savings wern't passed on to customers. Out of the huge losses of Australian now comes JetStar. We hope Qantas have learnt from that debacle and that they make JetStar a genuine LLC.

Australian Health Minister, Tony Abbot recently wrote an article
after a trip to Bali. In the article Tony urges Australians to return to Bali, their money allowing the people to return to economic well being through work with dignity.

Tragedy Strikes Again
July 17: Only 18 months after the world's largest recorded tsunami devastated Aceh and coastal areas around the Indian Ocean killing hundreds of thousands, Indonesia has suffered again with a tsunami that hit the south coast of Java, 20 minutes after a 7.2 earthquake 220km south of Java. As we go to press more than 650 have died and many are still reported missing. The true figure may never be known. Many more have  been injured and thousands of homes destroyed.
Early Warning System
Although a Tsunami warning system has been installed in Sumatra and Bali, none was yet installed  in Java. Although work had started the Tsunami alert system won't be completed until next year. Many live in very remote fishing villages along the coastline, and it is very difficult to alert them especially in the short time available.

One proposal is to set up a system where all mobile phones are .......

SMS'd on mass from the tsunami warning centre. This would give the people time to run to higher ground. The biggest problem is that Tsunami's occur so infrequently, yet earthquakes in Indonesia are a daily occurrence. Another suggestion has been to install warning sirens on all mobile or cell phone towers near beaches.

At the KHO
The KHO Earthquake Alarm sounded at 16:25. Monday July 17. The alarm rang for over 5 minutes, the chandelier in the KHO lounge swinging ever so slightly. With our alarm we have no idea where the earthquake is, it just registers earth movement. However experience from previous earthquakes has
Chandelier rocked
taught us, that if the alarm rings for an extended period and we feel nothing, it is most probably a big earthquake a long way away. This was certainly so with the Aceh and the recent Yogyakarta quake.
John Adjusting the KHO Alarm
The First Media Report
The first report of the earthquake was on Indonesia's Metro Tv, 15 mins, after the KHO Earthquake Alarm sounded. Followed within
half an hour an email from the US National Earthquake Information Center stating that the quake occured at 9.295S, 107.347E at a magnitude of 7.2 and a depth of 48km, 262 km S (185 deg.) of Jamal's hometown Bandung, Java.
BALI TSUNAMI 1994
The last tsunami to hit Java and Bali was on June 3 1994, The shock was felt on east Java and on Bali,  50 minutes after the 7.4 quake 250 km out to sea, a large tsunami struck killing 223 persons and injuring 400 and over 1000 houses destroyed.

On May 27, a 5.9-magnitude quake hit Yogyakarta and Central Java. More than 5,700 people were killed and 37,340 injured thousands of houses were destroyed. Many aid agencies have entered the area to help with re-construction.
Mia & Serg Soenen
KHO subscriber and Bali residents Mia and Serge from Belgium wanted to help. Mia travelled down to Yogyakarta and helped with humanitarian and medical aid. Later Mia's husband Serge a builder, who runs the well known Mr Handyman service in Bali, decided to help with the rebuilding. After seeing the

immensity of the destruction they would be best to concentrate their efforts on a single village called Jati, part of Plered in the Bantul district
and organize the re-construction.
An emergency “posko” was built for treating the wounded and for dispatching the donated goods.

Over 3,00 tents were erected,
Mia re-installed the children's play group and was granted the authorization (and found a sponsor) for the building of a makeshift bamboo school for accommodating the 500 remaining children of the Jati village.

Another problem facing the village was water - many of the irrigation watercourses were damaged, Serge's temporary solution was to use fibreglass sheeting. Next the rebuilding of homes had to be addressed. Serge realized that over 3 million bricks would be required, buying them is out of the question, so far Mia and Serge have been funding the project helped by a number of Belgian friends and donors in Bali. Serge thought
Serge (Left) inspects a Kiln
perhaps they should build a traditional brick kiln. After inspecting a kiln run by Belgian friends, Serge realized it would take far too long to make 3 million bricks by hand - people need shelter for rainy season starting in November. He then came up with a brilliant idea, why not use all the thousands of tons of rubble, mixed with cement to make reinforced cement walls. Early tests show this combination is actually more earthquake proof than traditional construction.
Village Meetings
Serge and Mia have had many meetings with the locals in Jati village. The plan now is to build 260 completely new homes and repair and renovate 43 others.
Jati Village Meeting
Plans have been drawn up and posted at the local Mosque for villages to make comments and suggestions. It is very important that the villagers are full participants in the rehabilitation of their community.
Expensive
This is a self help project with the labour being provided by village volunteers and even with Serge's brilliant idea of using the rubble from the earthquake as the primary building material, money is needed, but no where near what a regular project NGO would require with paid workers and highly paid western co-ordinators. Approaches a being made to international donor agencies. If you would like  help financially with Mia & Serge's project please email them. bondue@dps.centrin.net.id

The Ubud Writers and Readers Festival  will be held October 30 until September 3.
Jamal's new Phone
Bali Post: Well the old Nokia fell on the street and guess what? No more work!, keput, dead. The answer in this wonderful disposable world in which we live, go buy a new one. Jamal searched around
and found the best price was a Motorola L6 only released on the market earlier this year. The price in Bali was A$170 inc. battery & charger.
Apart from all the usual garbage the handphone features: an integrated VGA (Very Good Aim) digital camera with video and criminal capture. Hands Free for armless people, and 2,000 very, very, very annoying ringtones.
Jamal can now send photo's, SMS's and his laundry through his new Blue Tooth. (left) What with Blueberry, Blackberry
and the soon to be released big Raspberry, where will it all end.
Bali - The Best Island
ANTARA: New York- US popular magazine Travel & Leisure awarded the Indonesian tourist destination of Bali an appreciation as the best island resort in the world and in Asia in 2006. Deputy Indonesian Ambassador to the US Andri Hadi and Acting Consul General in New York Harbangan Napitupulu received the citation. The magazine also presented citations to Florence in Italy as best city and Singapore Airlines as the world's best airline.
Does Suzi Need Glasses?
KHO: Jamal is convinced KHO house cat Suzi is having sight problems and she should be
tested for glasses. I said "How ridiculous, who ever heard of a cat
with glasses?", then Jamal said "Well Ines (right) has had all her cats done", I said "Yes Jamal, but I think she means something else."
KHO Cat's Diet
KHO: Jamal now has a total of 8 cats to feed (fortunately another has run away), One would think it would cost a fortune to feed them, but it is quite inexpensive. We feed
them on a mix of steamed rice and Tongkol, a jumbo size sardine local fish. They are
very salty and vary from 15-20cm in length, Jamal uses 2 each day, steamed, then mixed with around 1/2kg of steamed rice. A Tongkol fish costs around 35 cents and is freely available at most small warungs, with rice at around 70 c/kilo. Total cost about $1.05/day.

Dance Hall Closes
KHO: Melody Kenangan dance hall in Denpasar, has closed due to lack of patronage. Jamal often sang there.
New Paintwork
KHO: The stove area in the KHO gourmet kitchen was looking a
little worse for ware after years of fat dripping down all over it. We scraped it all down (right) then painted it in real Indonesian white.
The Finished Job
Recently it was announced that ABC Asia Pacific would be put up for tender, the only takers were the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and SKY Australia. Although we never read any reports as to who became the successful tender,  it was announced mid June that the channel would change it's name to
the Australia Network and it would be run by the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission).
ABC Asia Pacific was started by Alexander Downer from his foreign affairs budget. Earlier we had an analogue Tv service from Australia initiated by the Keating gov. Not long after coming in to power John Howard sold it to the Seven Network. Not long after that Kerry Stokes decided the channel was costing the 7 network too much and ordered it closed down. The transition will take place from August 7. It appears that apart from re-vamping the news service
and changing the times, nothing much will change. ABC Press Release: "We will launch  Focus, a brand new current affairs
program airing Tuesdays and Thursdays" said Chief Executive Ian Carrol (right) it will be filled with news and views from around the
region and the world.  News headlines will be featured on the hour. Jamal's favourite Study English will continue along with Australian drama's and the thought provoking Getaway. John's perennial favourite Home & Away will return weekdays at 17:30, all combining to bring you a distinctly Australian flavour.
No Soap - like an old Soap
Australia Network will be carrying exclusive coverage of just about every conceivable sport especially AFL football and Rugby League.

KHO: The quality of vegetables in Bali's supermarkets is abysmal compared to what one would find in a western mart. The freshest fruit and vegetables available are at the Badung market in Denpasar, but who want's to get up at 5am and treck to Denpasar when we are only a small household. However there is a shining light at the vegetable shop opposite our favourite Warung Italy in Jalan Kunti, Seminyak. Quality varies but usually they have very fresh mushrooms, reasonable salads, all kinds of peppers and chilli. They are the only place we have found on Bali that stocks beetroot. Also they often have bawang bombay, brown onions to you, not all that common in Bali, Indonesians tend to use red shallots in their cooking.
Bali Recovery
by Rescuing Nature
Bird Release Ceremony
Bali : A series of Balinese ceremonies were held in Watu Klotok, Klungkung, Karangasem, Gianyar and Denpasar. Up until now the Bali recovery has been concentrated on the return of tourists, but the Balinese now have decided more is needed, they must restore their culture and nature which has declined just like tourism. At the ceremonies on the beach at Watu Klotok various species of birds were released. The program is aimed at motivating the Balinese to care about flora and fauna and the many endangered species. It is felt through the restoration of nature and prayer the tourists will return to the island of the Gods. (Source Bali Post)
KHO Water Valve
The mains water pressure at the the KHO is sometimes so strong that pipes burst. We explained the problem to a KHO visitor,
Aaron a plumber from Sydney. After returning home he and his wife Belinda very kindly sent us a
Caleffi water pressure valve, which we appreciated very much. All we have to do now is find a local plumber
who knows what the hell the Caleffi water pressure valve is. Aaron and Belinda many thanks from J&J.
A-380 Wing Breaks
Flight: During fatigue tests on the new Super Jumbo Airbus A380 the wing broke after it was bent vertically a whopping 7.4 meters.
The tests, done in a special rig at Airbus where loads are added until the wing breaks, it broke at 1.4 times the load limit, the requirement is 1.5 times. Airbus are now strengthening the 10 wingsets
already produced, which includes those on the flying test aircraft.
Over the design life of the aircraft, the wing may never get to 100% load, let alone 150% which the wing is designed to handle.
Wing Breaking Rig
Few people realize how much testing goes into a jet aircraft, which makes it the worlds safest form of transport.
Production Delays
The Airbus Super Jumbo is now 6 months behind schedule. Although launch airline Singapore Airlines swear they will fly passengers in the new aircraft before the end of the year, whether it is ready or not!

KHO Travel Advice
Bing Crosby, Dorothy Lamour & Bob Hope "Road to Bali" 1952
BEFORE LEAVING
* Make sure you have adequate travel insurance. Many tourists have accidents in Bali. Arguably more Australian have been killed and injured in the last 30 years in Bali from accidents than terrorists.
* Check air ticket conditions before buying, many tickets don't allow you to change the return date. You may be faced with buying an expensive one-way ticket in an emergency or sickness.
* See your dentist and doctor for a check up. If you are on medication bring enough for the duration. Bring your prescription.
* Bring a spare pair of glasses.
* Pack a small medical kit with Band-Aids, dressings, antiseptic, aspirin and diahoreea tablets
* Book into a smaller hotel or a Villa, remember terrorists prefer crowds, not that a hotel has ever been bombed in Bali
* Bring US$25 cash per person, for the Indonesian Visa On Arrival.
AFTER ARRIVAL
* Appreciate that you are visiting someone else's country. Remember what Gran said "Behave when your out."  By buying a package, you bought a nice economical holiday, you didn't buy the country. Be respectful to the locals, they are not all trying to rip you off, they are just trying to survive. How would you behave in their situation?, Could you smile as they do?. Remember a small tip goes a long way - a local can buy a substantial meal and drink for 45 cents - and don't be too hard with your bargaining.
KHO Travel Warnings
* Look where you are walking, especially at night and after a few drinks, the sidewalks in Bali are notorious for their deep, leg and hip breaking holes.
BEWARE - Broken legs and hips
* Be very careful crossing the road, never hesitate or stop, the motor bike coming straight at you will hit you, if you keep moving it will pass behind you. Indonesian drivers don't drive, they aim!
* Don't rent a motor bike unless you are a very experienced rider. Remember there are no road rules, don't expect someone to give way to you because you think you are in the right. Few live to give this advice to others. Bring an International motor bike licence.
* Don't rent a car unless you understand that the so called insurance will not protect you against you causing damage, killing or injuring an Indonesian.
* Don't drive without an International driving licence. Most times when you hear stories about the corrupt traffic police in Bali, it is usually because tourists are driving
without a licence, they tend to erase that part from their travel tale.
* Don't swim at dangerous beaches, all beaches on the western side of Bali, including Kuta and Seminyak, have dangerous undertows. If you must only swim where there are life guards.
*Avoid crowded restaurants, American icon restaurants and crowded bars especially in the tourist areas.
* Read our article on the next page about changing money in Bali.
* Check for Australian travel warning updates on-line or at airport Kiosks smartraveller

Sadly in Bali many tourists are tricked by money changers, with the tourist downturn  the unscrupulous dealers are getting smarter by the minute.
The Police lately have been closing down unlicensed changers, after a couple of days they are open again. Even the Money Changers Association of Bali have warned... "Members found playing dirty tricks, will give a reprimand" said Bali Tourism PR.. Officer Putu Oka.
As the authorities seem to be able to do little about the money changers, it is up to us to be aware and protect ourselves from these slight-of-hand expert tricksters.
The Tricks
The most common trick is for the money changer to count your money in front of you, as he does he drops notes down behind the counter. It all happens very fast.
Rule No:1, count your money yourself, before you leave the counter. Some have rigged calculators, always change money in 10's or 100's, so you can easily calculate. Before changing, check the official rate, it fluctuates hourly Yahoo Finance. You wont get the official rate, but you have some idea. Often the rate is better after 1pm and avoid weekends.  Beware of small money changers, i.e. in a dress or gift shop, they often offer an excellent rate just to lure you in, then short change you. If the rate offered is higher than the official rate - BEWARE. Look for a money changer with a large office and many staff and observe Rule No:1.
How to Count Safely
The best way to count your money so no one, especially the money
changer can interfere, is to count Rp 100,000 notes into Rp 1,000,000 wads, i.e. 10 notes, fold the last note over and secure under your arm. Then proceed to count the next wad. With Rp 50,000 notes count into Rp 500,000 wads, again 10 notes. After counting the large denominations put in your wallet, then count the small money.
What to do
if you are tricked
If for some reason you didn't follow our rule of checking your money before leaving the money change, or the changer got you confused by joking around and you arrive back at your hotel, count your money and find you've been diddled. We suggest you return to the money changer immediately and confront him. The best tactic is not to loose your cool, speak quietly, but firmly and tell the changer the amount that is missing and that you know he short changed you, this may be enough. However if that doesn't work, still maintaining total calm tell the changer if he doesn't come good, you will call the Police or the Banjar (village organization)
This technique has worked with 3 people we know here over the years. But best you never have this experience and always check your money.
Recommended Changer
PT Bali Maspint Jinra opposite Bintang Supermarket Seminyak, then 50m down towards Kuta.
Always check your money before leaving
You can change money at banks, but the money changer rate is usually better. The airport changers give a very poor rate. Only change what you need, until you can get to a reputable changer. Hotels also give a bad rate. ATM's are all over, but be careful what your bank charges. BCA at Fabios & Bintang have Rp 100,000 ATM's Rp 2.5M. max, others only allow Rp 500,000.

John's time at HSV-7 Melbourne 1960-1970
During the month we received a very pleasant email from Brian Doherty, who lives in Mirboo North, in John's home state of Victoria, Australia - Thank you Brian - we have printed it below.
Hi John, I have just come across your Channel Seven Memoir and have spent the last hour most enjoyably, reading your recollections and taking in the photographs and diagrams etc.  My background was also in Television and like you am a Gippslander, though just a tad younger.
I started work at GLV10 in 1968, working in the film department, then telecine, studio camera, on air audio and finally presentation. We took many HSV programs from
"off air" including WOS (World of Sport) and TV Ringside, so I too have many fond memories from the era you write of. Even before working in television, I can still recall many of the programs you  mention, as we had a TV at home in Morwell from about 1959 onwards. Your stories of boring late night movies and how we spent the time trying to amuse ourselves till knock off time, ring so true for me.
I suppose there is still a bit of Telecine Op left in me,  because just recently I purchased a pair of 16mm Bell and Howell projectors like you guys had at HSV and we had in Traralgon. These came from CTC 7 where I worked for about 5 years in the mid 70s.
 Bell and Howell Jan projector
Some one asked me what I was going to with them, my answer was to get them going and just look at them every now and then and remind myself of the journey.
I have lived in Mirboo North for about 26 years and run a small production company catering for corporates and their training needs. My youngest daughter is an IT graduate and she works with me in the integration of my material into computer programs. I raise this because she went to school in Leongatha and after completing her degree returned there and plans to make it her home.  Once again, thank you for taking the time to undertake your memoir, may you find the time to complete it and best wishes for the future. Regards, Brian Doherty www.htvp.com.au
Travellers warned of NZ dangers
ABC On-Line: By New Zealand correspondent Peter Lewis. A British insurer has warned travellers of the dangers of visiting New Zealand. Tourism has emerged as New Zealand's major growth industry in recent years. But according to a British survey of
travel insurance claims, there is obviously a few growing pains. New Zealand's rated fourth behind Thailand, South Africa and India as the most dangerous country to drive in and also features in the top five for incidents of petty theft and lost or misplaced luggage. The Opposition National Party's tourism spokesman, David Carter, says it is an indictment on the lack of investment in roads.
Next Month
We will give you full details of John & Jamal's upcoming August 30 trip to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and then on to Sarawak, first stopping at the historic "White Raja" city of Kuching, then on to malaria and crocodile infested Kapit on a jungle river boat.
The full report of the trip will be in the October Edition of the KHO News.
