Jan 14 AAP: INDONESIA wants Australia to lift its travel warning against the nation as the two countries forge closer ties.
Indonesian Trade Minister, 51 year old, Mari Elka Pangestu, who is the first female Indonesian Chinese to hold a cabinet position in the Indonesian
Government, said yesterday that she hoped Australia would lift the warning as it gained more confidence in Indonesian counter terror efforts through closer
co-operation. The comments came at the Association of South-East
Asian Nations summit in Cebu, Philippines, where leaders pledged tighter
co-operation on fighting terrorism, signing their first convention on counter terrorism. "We feel that travel warnings
are the right of every country to impose, obviously," Ms Pangestu told a Television reporter.
"But we would hope that with the co-operation that is being undertaken right now, will lead Australia to lift the ban."

South Thailand - Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat & Songkhla - attacks continue, almost 2000 dead in bombings, shootings and decapitations over the past two years, gets a reconsider rating the same as Bali.
Be alert to own security
Exercise caution
High degree of caution
Reconsider your need to travel
Do not travel
We feel the above is inconsistant and that the two countries should be at minimum inline. Our suggestion, reduce Indonesia's overall warning to High degree of caution and increase South Thailand to Do not travel.

Jamal's Bargain
Villa of the Month
Spacious Living Area
Stairs to Happiness
Ever dreamed of buying a villa in Bali, but thought it too expensive, well think again. Jamal has found this affordable house in the elite "in demand"  Brawa/Canggu area.
It has a total land area of slightly less than 200 sq. mtrs. Breezy open living areas, generous kitchen area, 3 upstairs hotel style bedrooms with ensuites and a balcony with paddy field views. Why pay 100's of 1000's of dollars, when you can have a prestige house in Bali at this low price of only Rp385 Mil or ~US$ 44,777. Try and buy a holiday house elsewhere for that!

Bali Environment
A view from within
Jakarta Post: The King of Gianya, Bali, Anak Agung Gde Agung, decided after the death of his
father that he must take a leading role in the preservation and rehabilitation, of Bali's environment. In a search for more information on Balinese culture he
The Late King
went to Leiden University, Netherlands. There has been a grand shift of Balinese from an agrarian to a commercial society. "It's worsened by the (local) government's misdirected policy to let deforestation and land clearance continue for the sake of tourism,"
Beach Erosion
"Statistical data has shown that all of the 38 beaches in Bali had eroded by an average of 125 square meters per year, while a total of 25,000 htr of forest had been converted into hotels, malls or other tourism spots in the past decade," He cited the exploitation of the sacred Ayung River, the site
5 Star Hotel on the Ayung River
of many hotels, whose construction had  destroyed its habitat. "No one dares to challenge or protest the construction here as entrepreneurs have good links to the ruling elite."
Bali’s "Mr Tourism"
Pak(Mr) Ketut Suarmadijasa the star of the successful "Where the Bali Hell are You?" campaign
has confirmed that he won't be appearing in news headlines for the wrong reasons like his Australian counterpart, Lara Bingle. Pak Ketut  is a tour guide from Tabanan. he said "You won’t catch me on Jamie Packer’s yacht with a supermodel on each arm. I prefer to be at home in Tabanan sipping tea"
Bali Art Festival
If in Bali, 17 June - 15 July you must see the Bali Arts festival, with it's huge collection of handicrafts and exhibitions hosted by locals from all over Bali. Thousands from different regions congregate to present local products, food stalls and stage performances and live music adding to the atmosphere. Bali's Art Festival is an example of the governments focus on installing a structure of cultural tourism.
Indian Ocean Change
Indonesia, Bali and Australia risk more droughts from shifts in the East Indian Ocean temperatures and stronger monsoons due to global warming. Studies of 6,500 year old fossil corals have revealed links between monsoons, droughts and periodic cooling of the Indian Ocean. Drought and crop failures could slow an Indonesian drive to end poverty,
Often Indonesian air passengers refuse to present their ID on checking-in at airports, usually because they have bought their ticket from some dubious source and their name is not on the ticket. The Indonesian Government have announced that they will enforce a 20 year old law that all passengers must present identification and their name must match the ticket. The Government says this will enhance air safety making it easier to identify dead passengers after a crash.
Adam Air Pays Out
Adam Airlines will pay US$55,000 as compensation for each passenger on its Boeing 737-400 aircraft that vanished on a flight from Surabaya to Manado on New Year's Day with 102 people aboard. Adam Air have also announced that they will replace all their ageing Boeing 737 aircraft with Airbus 320's in the near future to reduce aircraft crashes.

Lombok Ferry Fire
A Lombok Ferry
Jan 13: Shortly after leaving Padangbai the KMP Nusa Bhakti's engine room caught fire. The quick thinking captain beached the ferry on Leprosy coast, Bugbug, Karangasem, around 1,5 km east Candidasa, all 91 POB escaped to shore. The fire was put out. Many passengers complained that there were no evacuation procedures.
Scavenging
It took nearly 5 days for the Indonesian army to construct a bamboo road over the 200 meters of sand to the ship and for the
trucks onboard to go ashore. When the last truck went out the local residents were allowed on board to scavenge any left over cargo, they pushed and shoved, screaming with delight ignoring the overwhelming stench from rotten eggs and fish. They found instant noodles, some still fresh eggs and many other food items. Some truck were damaged from the swaying of the ship and the owners want compensation. The company says the ship will be refloated soon.
Home Chickens Ban
Indonesia has banned home poultry farming after six people recently died from bird flu.
Challenges confronting the fight against the spread of the bird flu virus is
that chickens are kept in private homes across the archipelago, providing a source of cheap meat and eggs, however it is now considered too dangerous. Welfare Minister, Bakrie, said, the situation would improve if humans and birds were separated.

Middle of January Leo and Erna's daughter Kim, husband Tristan, baby Timo and father in-law Jaap arrived in Bail from Holland. January 18, baby Timo celebrated his 1st birthday, we attended.
A party was held at Warung Sobat to celebrate. Baby Timo was so confused when Pak Made presented him with a birthday cake, but soon learnt to blow out the candles and demolish the cake.
Proud mother Kim, father Tristan and grandfather Jaap celebrate.

The renovations at Padangbai are now complete, all the warungs, restaurants and boat sheds along the beach have been demolished.
It certainly looks far more attractive, however we feel so sorry for the locals who have been forced to move their businesses 100 meters away from the beach. A highlight of the beach was at nightime and go sit on chairs on the beach at Kinky bar.

Mykonos Tavern
Re-visited
We last reviewed Mykonos Taverna in July 2003.  Back in those days it was excellent and only one of a few restaurants on Jl Oberoi before it became packed with restaurants and know to the ex-pats as "Eat Street". Sat night Jan 20 we re-visited Mykonos. The first observation was that it wasn't as full as it used to be and the diners were mostly families with kids. The live Greek music is no more and the staff off handed. The menu arrived all prices +10% tax, use credit card another+10%. The wine list is not bad, Bali Hatten wines Rp65,000 (A$9.28), various Chilean wines for Rp125-160,000 (A$18-23), Aussie. Jacob's Creek Rp180,000 (A$26). We decided to have Bintang beer, Rp18,000 (A$2.60). They were quite pushy for us to order, maybe because nothing much to do. First a Humus
dip and pitta bread to share. The Humus, totally tasteless, however the bread was excellent. Owner  Myronos, recognized us and briefly spoke to us then disappeared. Before we had finished eating the  entree, the waitress tried to take it away, ..."sorry we haven't finished yet", the waitress replied "but, your main course is ready", in a minute the mains were there. When will we ever learn - "never order the main course in Indonesia until you have finished the entree", although we would have thought they would have had better training at Mykonos. Jamal had spaghetti seafood and said "not nice at all". He said it tasted like it had been microwaved and the prawns were like rubber. I had Greek roast chicken, which was overdone and very dry and full of MSG. I suspect re-heated by deep frying. The vegetables were passable but the chips soft and greasy. We felt they couldn't wait for us to leave, we were out of there in 1h:15m, how fast-food is that? Couldn't complain about the speed of the service. Cost inc.  2 lg beers and +10% tax was Rp130,000 (A$18.60) Worth a try ..... maybe we expected too much from the good old days.

Movie Review
The QUEEN
Since seeing the BBC World "Talking Movies" review, we have been very keen to see the film. Jamal has tried for weeks, all DVD shops sold-out.
Yesterday Jamal was finally successful. Helen Mirren does an excellent job playing the Queen.
The film is an intimate behind the scenes glimpse at the interaction between HM Elizabeth II and Prime Minister Tony Blair during their struggle, following the death of Diana, to reach a compromise between what was a private tragedy for the Royal family and the public's demand for an overt display of mourning.......Excellent!
Book Review
Fragrant Harbour
I have just finished reading Fragrant Harbour (Hong Kong - in Chinese) by John Lanchester. Set in Hong Kong, the story is told through the eyes of several people.
Dawn Stone is an ambitious young woman who wants to make as much money as quickly as she can. Tom Stewart is an Englishman who had been in Hong Kong since 1935 and made his fortune in business. Sister Maria, whom Tom wants to love, is a devout nun and tends to the poor. Their stories all converge in the end when Hong Kong is passed from British to Chinese rule.

I Meet Tom Courtenay
Whilst on a trip to the UK in 1969,
I travelled with friend Ian Davey to Manchester where we met with ex-HSV 7 journalist Chris Akhurst.
On the first night Chris took us to see Tom Courtenay star in the Braham Murray production of "She Stoops To Conquer". This was the closing night of an out of town tryout before the
Courtenay
play moved to the Garrick Theatre London, where it had an acclaimed run. Chris' friend Norman was property master on the play so we got free seats and were invited to the wrap party after the show.
At the party we were introduced to Tom, he asked me "What did I do in Australia?". I told him I was the Chief Sound Engineer on the police drama series Homicide, which was then being shown in the UK.
Tom said he had seen it and thought it "very amateurish". I was a little taken a
back, because we in Australia were very proud of the programme, however on reflection compared to
say Dr. Zhivago, where Courtenay appeared with Alec Guinness, Ralph Richardson, Rod Steiger, Julie Christie and Omar Sharif. Tom was right. By comparison
Homicide was a home movie.
At the time Tom was at the height of his career with a succession of acclaimed films including The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962), Billy Liar (1963)  and  Dr. Zhivago (1965).
Knighthood
In Feb 2001, Tom Courtenay was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and John flew
to Singapore to search for any remaining old colonial buildings.

The latest Indonesian air tragedy, the disappearance of an 18 year old, 45,371 hour, Adam Air 737-400 with 102 POB on New Years day, singles out how cut-throat competition, weather and corruption combine to take many lives. Adam Air suffered an embarrassing incident, Feb. 2006 a Boeing 737 lost communication, 1 hour later it landed at Tambolaka, Sumba, several 100 km's off course. The pilot asked for a replacement aircraft before departure, due to faulty avionics, the request was refused. Since 2001 there have been 19 scheduled carriers start up in Indonesia. The fleet of ageing planes operated by cash-strapped carriers and supervised by corrupt officials has experienced 73 accidents since 2001, a total of 479 victims, 201 dead and 278 injured.
Government Action
The Indonesian Government has reduced aircraft age limits from 35 years  to 20 years, and have introduced spot safety checks at airports, however most Indonesian accidents are attributed to pilot error rather than mechanical failure, as is the case world wide.
1997 Garuda Indonesia
Sep 26, 1997 a Garuda Airbus 300 from Jakarta was approaching Medan, the air traffic controller instructing the aircraft to turn left, when he should have said right. The airplane crashed into a wooded area with 234 fatalities.
2002 Garuda Indonesia
Jan 16, 2002, a Garuda Boeing 737-300, flight 421, both engines flamed out in an intense rainstorm approaching Yogyakarta, they performed an emergency landing in the Solo River. Only death was an air hostess who jumped from the aircraft before it landed.
2004 Lion Air
Nov 30, 2004, a Lion Air Boeing 737-200, 103 POB. The aeroplane failed to become airborne, the aircraft overshot the end of the runway. The pilot had attempted to take-off without flaps deployed.
2005 Mandela Airlines
Sep 5, 2005, a Jakarta-bound Mandala Airlines Boeing 737-200 jetliner crashed into a heavily populated residential area seconds after taking off from Medan, Many  houses and cars were destroyed, and 39 persons dead on the ground. At least 16 persons survived the accident, with 104 POB dead including 3 babies. The aircraft was thought to be overloaded. A foul durian fruit smell enveloped the crash site, it was later discovered that the overloading was due to 2 or 3 tonnes of durian fruit brought
by Sumatra Governor and ex-Governor travelling on the flight intended as gifts to bring to Jakarta, and not listed on the flight's load manifest.
Durian
Conclusion
While everybody is understandably complaining about the poor maintenance, it is interesting to note all of the above accidents were due to weather, incompetence or pilot error. Few tourists have been killed in Indonesian air accidents, in fact more tourists have drowned at Kuta beach in the last 5 years.

During the month we were rather perturbed to read this story in the Sydney Morning Herald; A Qantas jet, flying Sydney to Los Angeles returned to Sydney after flight crew and passengers were startled by several loud noises and large cracking sounds and dust fell from the ceiling. The cause of the noises is still a mystery. Qantas spokesman Lloyd Quartermaine said the aircraft had been "thoroughly inspected" but there was no evidence of any structural damage, and it had been returned to service. The same Boeing 747 aircraft was at the centre of a previous safety scare after being operated by Malaysian Airlines. Three years ago large cracks were discovered during a heavy maintenance inspection. It is believed the cracks were a result of paint and sealant being scrapped off before the aircraft was repainted into Qantas colours.

After the overwhelming success of last months column from Queen Elizabeth II, we present another letter to the Queen.
Dear Queen Elizabeth,
I have a real nice Japanese car,
I never have had a flat tyre- EVER, I'm just so terrified about that. Nights I dream about it, in fact I get new tyres every year, just so it can't happen to me. If I ever did get a flat, how do I change the wheel..... Sincerely  Beryl of Perth.
Dear Beryl of Perth,
Well that is a question we can certainly answer from experience. You may not know, but when we was a young girl and still a Princess, (that's before they made we a Queen), during WW II, we were on active service and we used to drive a big truck. Part of our rigorous training was to be able to change a tyre in minimum time.
We changing a tyre - WWII
Now Beryl compared to that, your challenge is simple. First you have to find the Jack, ring spanner and spare tyre. You say you have a Japanese car, Oh dear!, those things could be anywhere. They say those Japanese don't have a sense of humour, we think they certainly do, especially when it comes to funny places to hide these items. Now, jack up the wheel, don't let any of your body under the car, the Jack may fall. Undo the wheels nuts and change the tyre. Make sure your nuts are tight and you're on your way. Of course we never have flat tyres, the Royal Range Rover's are bullet proof.
Until next time,  your Queen,

Many first time tourists ask us, how is Batik is it made and what should we look out for?,
Batik is the Indonesian Malay word referring to a generic wax resistant dyeing technique used on fabric. The word originates from Malay word for dot or point, "titik" Batik is found in several countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Iran, and Thailand but is most popular in Indonesia and Malaysia. The island of Java in Indonesia is famous for its batik. Melted wax is applied to cloth before being dipped in dye. Wherever the wax has seeped through the fabric, the dye will not penetrate. Sometimes several are
used, with a series of dyeing, drying and waxing steps. Thin wax
lines are made with a canting a wooden handled tool with a tiny metal cup and
spout, out of which the wax seeps.
To begin work the batik waxer holds the canting in the hot wax for a minute to heat it up then removes it. In applying the wax the artists movements must be very decisive and quick. Any hesitation will results in a blob of wax.
The wax cools quickly, so after a minute or so she must dip the canting in the wax and begin again The process takes a great deal of patience and concentration. Other methods of applying the wax include pouring, brushing, and applying the hot wax to precarved wooden or metal wire block and stamping the fabric. After the last dyeing, the fabric is hung to dry.
Then boiled  to absorb the wax and reveal the deep rich colours and the fine crinkle lines that give batik its distinctive character.
How to Tell if Batik
 is Authentic
With modern screen printing an excellent batik copy can be made, these are often bought by tourists thinking they are getting the genuine article. The most obvious difference is the price, screen printed Batik is a lot cheaper to produce, however unscrupulous sellers sometimes tell unsuspecting tourists that the batik is authentic and ask a high price. The easiest way to authenticate a piece of batik is to look on both sides. If authentic both sided of the batik will be the identical colour, this is because the dye soaks through the fabric in the genuine process.
Front                 Back
If the batik has been screen printed it will have a face and back side, the latter being lighter because it is screen printed on one side only.

The best apples for apple pie are a variety developed by Mrs Maria Smith of West Ryde, Sydney.
Known as Granny Smith, she was born Maria Ann Sherwood in Peasmarsh, Sussex, England, in late 1799. Her father worked as an agricultural labourer and Maria also went into farm service.
At the age of 19, she married Thomas Smith, a farm labourer. The Smiths lived in Beckley for the next 19 years, during which time Maria bore 8 children. In 1838 they were recruited by government agents looking for people with agricultural a skills sorely needed in the colony of New South Wales
They arrived in Sydney Nov. 27, 1838 aboard the Lady Nugent.
