BALI NEWS
New restaurant
Well known local restaurateur Marinos, the man who founded "Eat Street" with his legendary Mykonos Greek restaurant has
opened a new place called Chat Café on the site of the old Costa Smeralda  on Jl Kunti, Seminyak, on the corner opposite the service station, just past Bali Deli.
Marinos has applied his style of good food at a reasonable prices, entree smoked fish and meats will with garlic bread cost you around Rp 20,000 (A$ 2.60) Main courses are around Rp 30,000 (A$ 4).
We have not tried it yet and will do so in the next weeks and bring you a full report next month.
Marijuana -
Indonesian Coriander?
Jakarta Post: Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla has adopted a "soft approach" on marijuana use, telling the English language Jakarta Post, "it's alright to use it as a food seasoning, but it should not be fully legalized," The Vice President's comments were apparently prompted by reports commissioned by Indonesian government agencies tasked with narcotics control that suggested a review of criminal penalties for the recreational use of marijuana. The illicit weed is a popular additive in cooking in parts of the Indonesian island of Sumatra with one restaurateur commenting to Jakarta Post  "marijuana is available in any Acehnese kitchen just like coriander. Marijuana is a widely accepted cooking spice there."
Indonesian Aircraft Ban
Bali Discovery: The European Union has officially banned all Indonesia registered aircraft from landing at airports of their 27-member countries. While no Indonesian air carrier currently operates a schedule to Europe rendering the injunction to some degree moot, the prohibition, set to take effect from July 6, 2007. Based on recommendations of the European Union Air Safety Committee, the prohibition represents a wholesale condemnation of Indonesian civil aviation for failing to meet International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) safety standards. The European Community sanction follows an April 2007 U.S. warning issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) advising its nationals to arrive at Indonesian gateways on foreign air carriers and avoid all Indonesian domestic flights.
KHO gets new Tv
KHO Bali: A sad day for the inmates on the Kerobokan Home Office last Tuesday when the primary television set "blew up" in
the KHO Media Centre. Jamal was flabbergast, "how can we watch the soccer, it's Armageddon - the end of the world as we know it" he exclaimed.
"Oh No"
On hearing the catastrophic news, friend Michael who is staying Bali generously offered to donate A$100 to help replace the instrument. Then mum Nancy, currently staying at the KHO, piped up and offered another A$200.
With that we were able to buy a new 29 inch Toshiba
Television set. Michael who runs a Tv business in Melbourne, chose the set for it's picture quality and durability. The KHO would like to thank Michael and Nancy for this kind offering.

Early June John travelled down to Melbourne, Australia to get a new Visa and visit friends and family. After almost 10 years of living in Bali the Melbourne winter was almost too much to bear. One day it was 4oC at midday, lots less than the 30oC he is accustomed to.
John Flew Jetstar
John flew to Melbourne with JetStar, Qantas' Airlines latest attempt at a low cost long-haul carrier after the failure of their Cairns based Australian Airlines.
John's Flight Report
Check-in went with no problems, Denpasar Airport now has the "No-Liguids" policy and people  with bottled water had it confiscated on entering the airport. Some people bought water air-side after security and immigration to take on the aircraft as you can do in Melbourne. They were in for a surprise. JetStar/Qantas have decided that Denpasar airport security is not good enough for them, so everyone is again
relieved of their liquids on entering the departure lounge. I don't know what happens if you have bought duty free alcohol in the terminal, presumably that is confiscated also.
Full Body Frisk
Next is a full body frisk by a JetStar employee, some people even had to take their shoes off, plus a complete search of all cabin baggage. Anyway it filled in the time and kept the passengers amused.
Note Plastic bag on hand
The flight left around 30 minutes late, however we arrived in Melbourne 15 minutes early at 0715. We understand that JetStar over quote the flying  time so they can always arrive on time or early regardless of the winds.
Boarding
Boarding was orderly and the recently refurbished ex-Qantas Airbus A330-200 looked smart. Seats are covered in water proof black leather and have 31 inch spacing in economy and 37 inch spacing in StarClass.  The cabin has an all white airy feel.
Jetstar StarClass Seats
The Cabin Crew were all Asian, I have no idea where JetStar hijacked them from, however my crew member spoke with an Australian Accent, she complained that they have to do the flight up from Melbourne as well as the flight down making it an almost 15 hour shift for them.
We found the cabin crew ok, just doing their job but that's all.

John Flew JetStar A-330-200 Registration VH-EBA To Melbourne
Obviously paid models
Welcoming smiles are not included in the service. But I guess we must remember it is a no frills airline. After the food service the cabin crew disappeared never to be seen again until the aircraft was preparing to land.
Lots of Rules
Before take off the flight director told us all the JetStar rules, there are so many, don't drink your duty free alcohol on board, don't change your seat, don't do  this, don't do that and instead of just
announcing it was a no smoking flight, she proceeded read the riot act about how any one who is apprehended smoking anywhere on the aircraft will be handed over to the authorities on arrival and could pay a hefty fine. The broadcast went on for so long there were only moments for the  safety demo and for the cabin crew to secure everything for take-off.
Video on Demand
Next the video-on-demand players were distributed to passengers who had paid for them
on booking. Many players were faulty and the crew exchanged them or gave a refund. You can also purchase headphones to hear the aircraft movie or the music channels.
No Water
The JetStar website says a bottle of water is supplied free, no show.
Food Service
The ripp-off $19 meal consisted of a foil container containing penne with a tomato sauce, it was so dry when I opened the container half of it stuck to the lid. Although strict airline regulations forbid it, I would bet that the food had been re-heated from the previous flight, needless to say I didn't eat this offering from JetStar Café.  With  this was a small dry bread roll and a very limp salad. I was surprised how few people had a meal. Has word got around?. Maybe JetStar would rather you bring your own food, which they actually allow. A visit to Bali Deli before the flight would be a good investment. The $19 meal includes a free drink, on board we find that means one non-alcoholic free drink.
Only One Drink per PAX
Alcohol drinks are available with the meal and only during the food service and only 1 drink per passenger. This is not stated anywhere in the published rules that I can find. JetStar is certainly a sobering experience.
JetStar A-330 Aircraft
Seating
The standard Airbus A330 two class seating arrangement is 293 seats, however
303 Seats
JetStar have managed to squeeze in another 10 seats making a total of 303 seats.
4 Aircraft
JetStar have 4 Airbus A-330's in their fleet. John flew to Melbourne on VH-EBA Airbus 330, model 201,   purchased new by Qantas in 1995 and operated as "Cradle Mountain" until being totally refurbished in the Philippines for JetStar late 2006.

JetStar

Jet Flexi Fare
Cost: Fare $1295 + Meal x2 @$19 + blanket $7+ headphones $5. alcoholic drink extra (1 only).

Garuda
30 Day Economy
Cost: $995, Full economy service, FREE meal, alcoholic drinks , blanket, headphones.
Restrictions: Changes allowed before first leg, refund available - fee $220.
Conclusions
As you can see the fares between JetStar and Garuda only competitor on the run are in roughly the same.
Low Cost to Who?
However Garuda is a full service airline where, meals, alcoholic drink all come included. You are free to change your ticket even after departure, cheap insurance should something go wrong or perhaps you may extend your stay.
The JetStar, Jet Saver fare is only $90 cheaper than the Garuda full economy fare. However the Jet Flexi fare, which is closer in service to the Garuda fare is $350 dearer.
It's all about ME?
Perhaps Qantas are deluding themselves with their new business class advertising - "It's all about me" campaign. When they call JetStar a low cost airline they are just thinking about themselves and how the airline can be low cost to them, not to the paying passenger.
Ponder This
How come you can fly with Tiger Airlines from Melbourne to Singapore return for only $499
in the same period next February, when Singapore is 1667 km further than Bali. What is going on?
Meanwhile in Melbourne
The first night in freezing Melbourne we had dinner with friend Joe who is a high-rise builder.
With old friend Joe
Then off by bus to hometown Leongatha to visit with mum Nancy & brother Ross.

Ian and Mandy put on a BBQ, with lots of sausages for sausage starved John. Sausages in Bali are terrible.
Denny & Bradley freezing
Ian and Mandy's eldest son Mitchell has just turned 18 and got his drivers licence. Ian and Mandy decided to buy a new car and give Mitch their old second car. Mitch loves the car, but worries he will now be the one to ferry friends to parties on Saturday nights and of course he will be unable to drink.

On the 3rd day we headed off to the Bendigo football ground to watch youngest son Nicholas play football in the under 12's team.

Finally the game was over, we were all frozen to death and Nicks team won 8 goals to 1, they should definitely make it to the finals.
Apart from being an ace footballer, Nicholas is an accomplished cook, on returning home from football he baked us an apple pie.
With Simon
Second son, Simon is the computer guru of the family, he recently has networked all the family computers together and even has a computer with two screens, these he has wired up all by himself.

Bali's Poor are Not Getting Richer
Bali: The tourists are returning to Bali and the economy is improving however the gap between the rich and poor is increasing. According to the head of the consumer spending section of Bali's Central Statistic Bureau (BPS),  Didik Nursetyohadi. Reviewing current economic results for Bali, the first quarter of 2007 saw economic growth of 0.8% - a significant improvement over the previous year when tourist numbers were down following the Island's terrorist attacks.
