Vice President Jusuf Kalla announces new 120 day Visa on Arrival
Jakarta (ANTARA) Feb 15: Indonesia is to grant foreign visitors visas for up to 120 days compared to the current 30 days in a bid to boost sagging tourist
arrival figures. Vice President Jusuf Kalla said in an interview with Agence France Presse, "It is now being processed, that tourists can apply for a four month Visa."
VP Jusuf Kalla
He said the longer visa was part of the government's drive to attract more foreign visitors. At present, tourists from 54 countries can obtain a 30-day visa on arrival at a cost of US$25, or free for most ASEAN nations. Many visitors, especially retirees and backpackers have complained that 30 days is far too short a time to take in the vast, over 5,000 km wide archipelago.

New KHO Staff
Feb 15: New boy, Kiki from Bandung arrived in Bali to help out at the KHO. Jamal asked his sister Lina in Bandung if she knew someone who could help out at the KHO while Jamal is busily renovating, she suggested Kiki,
her neighbour  who often helps her out in the house. Kiki (Right) is 23, has 4 brothers and 4 sisters, he is the youngest.
Kiki arrived by the 23 hr (A$33- 1000km) bus from Bandung, which actually took 28 hrs. Jamal waited over 3 hrs at Ubung Bus station for the bus to arrive. After we had a late dinner.  Pak Yoga, then later Rohima and Eli bearing snow peas dropped in, it became a small welcome party for Kiki.
Rohima, Yoga, Kiki, John & Eli
Later Kiki told us had previously worked in a hair dressing salon in Bandung where he learnt to cut hair, everyone at the KHO is now sporting a brand new haircut.

Jhon or John?
I have always been intrigued since first coming to Indonesia twenty seven years ago, how Indonesians always spell my name Jhon. Last week Jamal and I
were having dinner with Leo and Erna, from Holland in Warung Sobat. My bill came and as
usual the name on top was Jhon. I mentioned this to Leo and Erna, who pointed out that Jhon is the Dutch spelling. Amazing how many things still remain in Indonesia from Dutch colonial times, pre W.W.II.
KHO Maintenance
Living in Paradise may be fine, however the tropics are hell on everything, house maintenance and repairs are never ending.
The latest victim was our emergency water system which covers in times the PDAM mains water is off. The system consists of a 500 lt. stainless steel tank mounted on the roof of the KHO.
First we noticed water running down the drain. Jamal climbed the roof and found the ball tap was not functioning. We tried to turn of the isolation tap, that wouldn't work either. They had lasted 7 years.
Off to the hardware store for a new isolation tap and ball tap and various plastic fittings. Fendy the builder came over to help with the ball tap and John replaced the isolation tap. Now as good as new, well for 7 years?
KHO Fans Club
The tiny double bunk bedroom at the back of the KHO gets yet another up grade.  Last October we installed an airconditioner and a
Tv now we have hard installed two 7" fans, one for each bunk deck plus we changed the light switch on the reading lamp to a 2 switch, switch, the second for
the fan. We had to  strengthen he lower bunk ceiling and make a roof fitting for the upper bunk.

And While we were at it
We were lucky enough to find a 80cm wide overlay mattress to make the bunks more comfortable. Currently they have a kapok mattress which is a bit hard, these we had to have specially made because mattresses usually come in 100, 120 or 200cm's wide. Yes! Yes!, we know this is boring, but we had nothing else to fill this space.
Midnight Quake at KHO
Feb 9 at 00:30 the KHO Earthquake alarm went off for 3 or so minutes. Next morning we found out from the US National Earthquake Centre that the 5.00mb quake was near Sumbawa, 413 km from the KHO. Although we felt nothing, we were pleased with the alarm's sensitivity.
KHO Visitors Galore
In the coming months the KHO is expecting an onslaught of visitors from Australia.
Apr 17: Nephew Simon arrives from Melbourne, he will travel with us to Malaysia, then return with us to Bali for a few days .
May 8: Old friend and business partner Ian will arrive from Melbourne for a 3 week stay.
May 19: Friends Denny and Bradley will arrive from Melbourne for a 10 days at the KHO.
Jun 23: John's mother Nancy plans to visit Bali to celebrate her 88th birthday.
Jun 30: Friends Michael, Linda and their 2 girls arrive for a months stay after spending a month in Hong Kong and China.
SURABAYA, Feb 21: An Adam Air 737-300 aircraft from Jakarta made a heavy landing at Surabaya airport, breaking the fuselage, there were no reported casualties. The government has grounded all 6 Adam Air 737-300 aircraft for safety checks. Prediction is that
this will be the end of Adam Air.
The Albatross in Bali

Bedugul Bali: Lake Bayan a crater lake in the Bedugal mountains is suffering extensive pollution and excess water use from the local residents and farmers.

JAKARTA, Feb 22: At least 16 people have died in a fire on the Levina I starting just after dawn, 80 km from Tanjung Priok, Jakarta's port. The ship was en-route to Bangka Island, near Sumatra.
Officials said there were 300 passengers onboard, but who knows? as officials often turn a blind eye to over crowding.
On Feb 27, the ferry sank, as it went down a Tv cameraman jumped from the ship he couldn't swim and drowned. Ferries are a popular and cheap mode of transport between Indonesia's thousand's of islands. But safety standards are often not enforced and accidents are common.
Bali Arrivals
Many new travel markets are emerging in Bali with tourists arriving in great numbers from new locations, compensating for the depressed Australian market.
Arriving Denpasar Airport
Malaysia arrivals increased +340%,  72.724 for 2006. AirAsia are credited with most of the increase after they introduced cut-price tickets in 2004.
China arrivals  were 42,687 in 2006.
Singapore arrivals were 40,664 in 2006, +134% growth from 2000.
Russia - Limited to mostly charter flights, arrivals have risen +250% since 2001 due to the recent introduction of regular flights by Singapore Airlines from Moscow
Valentines Day
Was celebrated in Indonesia like many other countries in the world. At Warung Sobat Leo presented all the staff girls with a red rose.

Leprosy on the rise
The World Health Organization (WHO) says Indonesia is the only country in the world where cases of leprosy are on the rise, by 19 % between 2004 -05, according to latest figures released  by the WHO.
Illegal Worker Crackdown
The Department has admitted that the problem of illegal foreign workers continues to grow and pledged to work closely with the police to identify illegal workers a in order that they can be brought to justice. Illegal foreign workers in Bali represent substantial losses in Government revenue.
Indonesians just can't believe the run of bad luck the country has been suffering for the last two or more years. The flooding of Jakarta with dozens dead and more than 300,000 homeless is the latest in string of disasters, from the 2004 Ache tsunami, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, droughts, outbreaks of bird flu, landslides, airline crashes, ships sinking and a vast and bizarre geyser of mud in east Java, to name a few, is wearing down the national psyche. Many people are now saying that nature is demonstrating and giving a sign that it is all the fault of the government. Although Permadi, a member of Parliament and a mystic has said “there are two ways of looking at the flood.” One of them, is the bad karma of both national and local leaders. “The other is that it is now rainy season.”

Nyepi-Bali New Year
This year the Nyepi Festival is 16th-20th of March and also marks the start of 1929 for the Balinese, who traditionally use the Saka lunar calendar introduced 465 AD.
Pre-Nyepi Ceremony
Celebrations begin with huge processions of Balinese carrying temple effigies and other sacred symbols to the beaches to performing cleansing rituals.
Sacrificing Animals
This is then followed by two days of "Tawur Kesnaga" and "Caru" temple rituals when chickens, ducks, goats, cows and bulls are
sacrificed to the Hindu gods. On Nyepi Eve, colourful exorcism rituals take place all over Bali. Massive effigies symbolizing demons and spirits are paraded on the crossroad's of every village.
Ogoh-Ogoh Procession
The Day of Silence, of Nyepi March 19, is when the island falls into complete inactivity for 24 hrs from 6.00AM. This is to trick the demons and spirits into thinking that everyone has left the island, so they will leave too. On this day, Denpasar International Airport is closed to all air traffic and all lights and fires are banned. Nobody is allowed outside, locals and tourists a like. Next day at 6:00AM normal life resumes and the Balinese welcome a new "demon free" year with singing, dancing and feasting. At the KHO with no lights at all allowed, we will have a very early night. Warung Sobat will be closed March Sat 17, Sun 18 and Mon 19.

In all fairness to JetStar we must explain that JetStar over schedule their flight times, then delay their departure time adjusting to forecast wind variations, ensuring that they arrive at the exact ATC (Air Traffic Control) designated slot time in Sydney or Melbourne. So don't get annoyed when your flight home is delayed, it will still arrive on time. Pity JetStar don't bothered to explain this to tired passengers.
I had my first actual "Night Off" last Saturday and stayed at "Manado
Ritzy Hotel" (Ritzy it Aint!!!). An ex-Novotel, it has been a beautiful property and, in fact still is, even
though looking a bit "tired".  Its biggest problem is service, which is virtually non-existent.

Bali Bans Bomb Film
DENPASAR: The Provincial Film Board of Bali has decided to ban screenings of the 2007 film "Long Road to Heaven," about the 2002 bombings because it could "reopen old wounds," said a board official.
The film directed by Enison Sinaro and written by Wong Wai Leng and Andy Logam-Tan had a high profile release in Jakarta last month.
Sinaro
According to Kalyana Shira Films: "The movie itself is trying to capture the moment from many different point of view, the terrorists, victim's family and foreigners. Though categorized as a feature film. " Long Road to Heaven," is based on factual research." Some people interviewed after the Jakarta premier felt the film did a good job of portraying the widely different attitudes of Muslims in Indonesia. Others thought the film's complicated structure would leave audiences behind. A third group felt that the film was sending a message that Bali had indeed become too liberal.
A study by the UN Inter- governmental Panel on Climate Changes has warned Indonesia it may lose as many as 2,000 lower lying islands by 2030 as a result of climate change. Rising sea levels of between 8-30 cm by 2030 is having an impact to an extent it could be a sign of far more extreme things to come, climate change used to be purely an environmental issue.
It's now becoming as much an economic, trade and political concern." said top UN climate official Yvo de Boer (right).
More Floods
Floods in the Southeast Asian region, most notably in Jakarta, Indonesia where dozens have been killed and 300,000 left homeless.
In December up to 10,000 participants from 100 countries are expected in Bali for the 13th UN Climate Change Conference.

Jakarta: (Reuters) - The U.S. embassy warned its citizens in Indonesia by email on Wed February 7 that the country's wild and stray
cats may carry the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus and should be avoided and that extra care needed to be taken with pet cats. The embassy said "There have been confirmed reports that wild and stray cats have been shown to carry H5N1, while there have been no documented cases of feline to human transmission of H5N1, it is important to avoid contact with wild and stray cats, and to ensure that domesticated cats do not eat or interact with sick or dying poultry," however, "There is no evidence of any widespread, human to human transmission of H5N1 virus in Indonesia or globally."
Jakarta Post: The Indonesian government is pressing ahead with its program to electrify under developed regions across the nation. Next month they will hold a tender for the procurement of 30,000 home solar-power units. Each unit can generate between 50 and 80 watts of electricity. "We have opted for solar energy as it will be cheaper than building power plants," Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purwono said. "With an estimated price of Rp 8 million (A$1142) for each unit, it will definitely be much cheaper"  Currently, out of a population of 260 million, about 100 million people living outside Java and Bali islands do not have access to electricity. State electricity firm PLN can only light up 54 percent of Indonesia's villages with it's current 25,000 megawatt capacity.

The Bela Vista Macau
On my first visit to the Portuguese Colony of Macau in 1969, one could not help noticing on arrival at the ferry terminal, the grand pink building on the hill.
Of course these days it is obscured by all the crazy high rise development along the shore line.
The building was built in 1875 as the Portuguese Governors residence. When the Portuguese left, the building became a hotel known as the Bela Vista. Over the years it became quite rundown and
was called "Fawlty Towers" by the Macau ex-pats. I remember the Portuguese waiter was Manuel to a tee.
View from the Bela Vista Hotel
In 1984 I returned to Macau with friend Ian from Bendigo, we had just spent 3 weeks trecking China. We headed straight for the Bela Vista Hotel. We were able to get a grand room, with a 4 arch balcony of our own (photo left -  room bottom right), all for US$15 per night. The last arch on the right was the bathroom, larger than most hotel rooms. The bath was in the
Bela Vista Entrance
centre of the room - you could sit in it and enjoy the view of Macau. The bedroom was huge - palatial. The view, definitely the best in all Asia. The hotel oozed colonial charm, one could sit anywhere and romanticize about the dear old lady in it's hay days. The next time in Macau around 1989, we again headed to the Bela Vista only to find it closed for renovations. The entire hotel was restored to it's original condition, for the born to complain - beautiful people, at US$700+. At least we stayed once.
Daytime Balcony View
At the end of 1999 Portugal returned Macau to China. The Bela Visa Hotel closed forever and has now become the residence of the Portuguese Consul General.
April 25, John and Jamal travel to Macau, they are still waiting for an invite from His Excellency the Consul, to come for high tea.
Movie Review
The 2006 film directed by George Hickenlooper tells a fictionalized story of mid-sixties socialite and Warhol superstar
Edie Sedgwick,
who is portrayed by Sienna Miller. Australian Guy Pearce plays Andy Warhol, and Hayden
Christensen portrays an unnamed rock star who is based upon Bob Dylan, (Dylan was unhappy about t
he film, and  had the film release delayed and threatened to sue.) After Sedgwick dropped out of art school in Cambridge in 1965, she moved to New York and met Warhol, who promised to make her a star. The movie portrays her rise to fame and subsequent downfall into obscurity. The KHO film reviewer gives the film ** stars.

Hi'ya Queen,
I hear you guys own a real nice Royal Train. Can you tell me all about it and where can I get a nice tour package to travel with you?
....... Seni, Smallville, USA
Dear Seni,
We regret, we don't sell packages to travel on the Royal Train. The Royal train is solely for my and my families use. Why is it that you charming people from across the Atlantic always think you can just buy anything. We mean ... really!
The Royal Train is actually a group of several Royal carriages assembled to form the Royal Train. Recently all carriages were upgraded to Mk 3, 125km/h high speed standard, allowing us to fit into the scheduled rail system without disrupting regular services. My dear great grandmother Queen Victoria was the first Monarch to
use a Royal Train, in 1842 She travelled from London to Windsor. After that, all the major British railway companies had their own carriages dedicated for our use.
A single "Royal Train" was only formed in 1977, this train has been maintained since by British Rail, although now we often travel on ordinary trains to minimize cost.
Class 67 Royal Locomotive
The current 10 car fleet consist of My lounge, bedroom and bathroom car, My husbands lounge, bed and bathroom car, My Royal Household sleeping car and My Royal Household dining car with kitchen, there are 3 of these, also 2 Royal Household couchette, diesel generator & brake vans. My son Charles' has a sleeping car and a saloon car. No Ms Seni, his saloon car is not an American Saloon Bar.

Bali Post: Plans are in place to re-launch Air Paradise (API) in March 2007. Closing abruptly in Nov.  2005, one month after the second Bali terrorist bombing, API's collapse left numerous passengers temporarily stranded in Bali and a multitude of advance ticket purchasers holding worthless tickets. API Director, Putu Oka Semadi, said there is a moral responsibility that API has to Bali's tourism industry. The continuing high demand for Bali as an international travel destination and the financial circumstances of the Airline are now conducive to a re-launch. Semadi said that API still has an air operators certificate. The Airline's Director told the press that travel wholesalers in Australia, Japan & Korea have been very
enthusiastic at the news of Air Paradise International's  rebirth.
Later Bail post reported a meeting attended by Governor Beratha, API President Commissioner Kadek Wiranatha, API Director Oka Semadi, and the Chief of the Bali Tourism Authority Gede Nurjaya – the Governor reiterated his long-standing interest in seeing the Island's government become an active participant in an international air carrier operation. Following the meeting, "Kadek" Wiranatha said "The Governor is very morally supportive API. In terms of material support, that will however need further study, although in principle the Governor is very interested." Kadek said "the Bali government would not be the first to invest in a commercial airline operation".

Garuda to Refurbish
Garuda Boeing 747-400
Bali Post: Garuda Indonesian has allocated US$54 mill to re-furbish it's International fleet, 3 Boeing 747-400's and 6 Airbus 330's.  The carrier made a loss of US$30 mill on it's international routes in the past year, attributed to selling tickets at a discount to compensate for the shabby condition of the aircraft interiors, including broken seats and broken television screens. It is hoped after refurbishment the airline will be able to show a profit in the forthcoming year.
