PAK MADE'S
UNCLE KILLED
BATU BELIG Sat Sep 8: Pak Made's late father's brother had been attending the temple in Batu Belig Saturday night. as he left, he
stepped into the street and was immediately hit by a motor bike. Sadly he died a few hours later in hospital. Pak Made's uncle lived a few doors down from Warung Sobat. Our sympathy to Pak Made and family. Sadly Jl Batu Belig has become quite dangerous since becoming a through road to Canggu following the construction of the bridge across the river. Already as reported last month our friend Wilhelm was hit by a motor bike, right outside Warung Sobat.
371 Deaths This Year
Bali's Chief of Police, Inspector General Paulus Purwoko, said that the death toll on Bali's roads hit 371 people for the year through the end of August 2007 – a number that holds the unenviable distinction of far exceeding the number who perished both terrorist bombings in Bali in 2002 and 2005.
Bali A'port Corruption
BALI DISCOVERY: In a widely circulated letter from Australian's Geoff and Dorothy Longhurst is told the harrowing tale of how JetStar failed to screen passports on a  Bali bound flight, allowing Mrs. Longhurst to board a flight with only 5 mths and 2 wks remaining in her passport, when it is mandatory to have at least 6 months remaining.
On arrival in Bali the Longhurst's were ushered into a side office at the airport where an immigration officer, identified as Nanang Yunanto, offered to resolve their problem for an unofficial fee of US$4,000, later lowered to $2,000.
US$ 4,000 BRIBE ASKED
In the end, the officer became abusive and forced the Longhursts to return to Australia on the next flight. Incensed,  Bali tourism leaders brought the  letter to the attention of ranking immigration officials in Bali who, relived Yunanto of his post. Indonesia's Vice President, Jusuf Kalla was in Bali September 26 and paid a unscheduled visit on the Airport immigration office were he demanded that Yunanto be fired for his alleged extortion against the Australian tourists.
Illegal Visa Renewals
BALI: Some unscrupulous Immigration Officers at Bali Airport are offering visa extensions on the US $25 non-extendable Visa-On- Arrival (VOA),  for a charge of around Rp 1.5 million (A$195), some are even brazen enough to give you an official Immigration business card with their name and handphone number. The officer will meet you, off duty and in plain clothes, at a public place, you give him your passport and the payment. The next time he is on duty at the airport he will put a new VOA in your passport, returning it to you at the meeting place later. With the high cost of doing a visa run, this is a very attractive proposition to many ex-pats.
However, remember it is illegal and should the Immigration officer be investigated,  it could be very embarrassing if they find your number is in his handphone.
HUGE 8.4 QUAKE
Hits Indonesia
WED SEP 12: 7.10pm Bali Time Jamal and I were preparing to go to dinner at Warung Sobat when the

At least 24 people killed, hundreds injured and more than 15,000 buildings damaged in the Bengkulu areas. A tsunami with a wave height of 2 meters hit the west coast of Sumatra, few were killed or injured as they ran to higher ground after the first shock.
Power and telephone outages occurred. The earthquake was felt by people in high rise buildings in Jakarta and in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

PADANGBAI Fri Sep 21, 1 pm the Lombok ferry "KMP Nusa  Penida" ran aground on rocks in bad weather while entering Padangbai harbour. By 5 pm 158 passengers including 20 foreign tourists were safely evacuated by other vessels. The captain said the bad weather was totally unexpected.
Allen Stranded
in Rangoon Unrest
KHO: Regular Bali visitor Allen who spends his life circulating between Los Angeles, Nepal, Thailand, Burma and
Bali was visiting Rangoon then the protests against the government erupted. Last email we had was Sep 25 and he reported he was ok and had obtained a flight out on Sept 30. All airlines report massive cancellations inbound, but totally booked out, outbound.
September 14-October 13
The observance of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, an opportunity for Muslims to test and develop their inner, spiritual selves. No eating, drinking, smoking or sex is allowed after the first prayer in the morning until the opening of the fast in the evening. Prayer times change based on sunset and sunrise, so the exact timing is different every day. The morning prayer is usually around 4:30am. Before this time, a Muslim family rises early to have a meal. Although this all appears a little austere Ramadan is a festive time, department stores and retailers have special offers and discounted
specials.  Food hampers are very popular and available at supermarkets.
The breaking of the fast, or Buka Puasa, occurs around 6:30 pm, a
time to celebrate and enjoy special food. Cakes baked especially for Ramadan are
eaten with great delight. Families join together to pray, eat, celebrate and socialize.
Family Celebrating Buka Puasa
Often business functions are held to celebrate the breaking of the fast.
Buka Puasa Business Function
In Bali. being primarily Hindu, one could easily be oblivious to Ramadan unless
you have Muslim staff.
One should respect their observance of Puasa and try not to eat, drink or smoke in their presence during daylight hours and don't invite them out for lunch.
If you're invited to a Muslim home for the breaking of the fast, it is an honour that should be accepted.
Idul Fitri Oct 14
The culmination of the festival of Ramadan is Idul Fitri when everyone tries to return home to be with the family. Airlines put on extra flights, the bus companies double the fares, the ferries are packed and all the roads are jammed. Bali becomes a ghost town as all the workers from Java and Lombok return home for the celebration.

Sri, Jessica & James Arrive in Bali
Sri, Jessica & James
BALI: Last December Jamal found a house in Umalas for James and Sri. After hours of negotiations Jamal got a very good price for them. Then they asked Jamal if he would surpervise the renovations as James
Traditional Balinese front door
had to return to Luxomburg to continue his flying training. Last week they arrived back in Bali and were extatic to see the changes Jamal has made to their house.
"We just can't believe it, it's so nice" shreiked Sri when she first arrived at their new Bali home.
House Interior
Next month James will go to Perth to continue his flying training and get his twin engine commercial pilots licence, he then hopes to work for an airline in Dublin.

Dede at the KHO
SEP 17: Jamal's 27 yo grand nephew Dede arrived at the KHO from Bandung to help us out and caretake the house while we are away travelling later in the year.
Dede said the 900 km bus trip was relatively good this time, only taking 24 hours, rather than the more usual 27-28 hours. Gee that's an average of 37.5 km per hour. The bus costs ~A$33 one way, that's 3.8 cents per kilometer and includes three meals of which Dede could only eat one, because he is observing the fasting month of Ramadan, where Muslims don't eat or drink during the daylight hours.
Dede is the grandson of Jamal's oldest sister Teteh who celebrates her 60th birthday this year. She lives
with Jamal's mother (now 74), in Ranca Ekek, a farming community, 15 km to the east of Bandung.

KHO PRESS CAM
Gets a New Set of Shoes
KHO NEWS OFFICE BALI: Don't you just hate it when you put your expensive digital camera down and you hear that terrible sound of plastic hitting wood or metal - how cheap! This was a dilemma facing the KHO photographers when on assignment, also the slippery plastic casing makes it easy for the camera to be slipped off the shiny bar in the Journo's bar after the job.
We called the KHO Engineering Department, and they came up with these nifty rubber feet. Would you
believe?  made from a bicycle tube and glued on with NASA approved GLY694c/9 synthesized rubber glue.
The feet were punched out with a paper punch and glued under pressure for 24 hours on the camera base.
Perfect result. Now we can leave the KHO Press Cam on the bar with no fear of it slipping off, no matter how drunk it gets.
Three Surprises
With Margaret & Ian
SATURDAY Sep 8 we received a surprise call from Margaret from Adelaide. We first met Margaret and Ian in Sante Fe restaurant years ago and many times after, they were Bali regulars, however we haven't seen them since the 2002 Bali bomb. We met them for dinner in Warung Satya as Warung Sobat is closed on Saturday nights. We had a pleasant time and it was great to see them again.
With Brad, Michael & Gede
SEP 16: Who should walk into W. Sobat but old time, home town friend Bradley along with friend Michael and their Balinese driver Gede. We haven't seen Brad since he stayed at the KHO along with nephew Trenton over 5 years ago. They decided they would drop in to Sobat to see if we were there.
With Paul & Pat
SEP 26: Who should be in Warung Sobat but Paul from England and his mum Pat. Paul was a regular at our "Lucky Draw" shows years ago at Purnama restaurant. We haven't met Paul since the 2002 bomb either. Everyone is certainly now coming back to Bali.
Assistant Chef Putu
BATU BELIG: Normally at Warung Sobat Pak Made and his wife share the cooking. If either has other commitments, one can cover for the other, however what happens if both cannot be present? - popular head waiter Putu takes over.
Le Chef Urgence Putu, fills in.

A secret sting operation by Indonesian police at the Kerobokan prison, 1 km from the KHO, has lead the
the arrest of the prison's security chief for running drugs both inside and out of the prison, he has reportedly admitted to using drugs but has denied he was a dealer.
Bali - HIV Up 30%
DENPOST BALI: HIV positive cases in Bali have increased 30% to over 4,000 in the last 2 years. New cases are dominated by infections from female prostitutes. This is a change for past patterns when 40-50% of old cases were blamed on shared needles. Local experts estimate 10% of female sex workers in Bali are HIV positive and that 100,000 customers are served by female prostitutes in Bali each year with only 20-30% using protection.

Mel Gibson in Bali
LAST WEEK the gossip columns throughout the world were buzzing with news that Mel Gibson had been photographed in Bali drinking, while Mel claims he is on the wagon. Gibson's publicist claimed the photo on the internet was fake, as is the photo below with Virginia, Mel and
Jamal having a cold drink of water at Warung Sobat.
False Advertising
MANY Real Estate agents in Bali advertise to foreigners in ex-pat newspapers, English billboards, brochures and plastered all over the front of their offices, that land and villa's are for sale  "Freehold" to foreigners, this is not true, in fact a blatant lie. The Indonesian law is quite clear, foreigners CAN NOT own land freehold in Bali.
Russia gets VOA
Putin & Yudhoyono
JAKARTA SEP 7: President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, who visited Jakarta on his way to the Sydney APEC conference, signed a reciprocal agreement for Russian tourists to be eligible for the $25, 30 day Visa-on-arrival (VOA).
Fiscal Abolition 2010?
BALI POST: The Indonesian Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani, has proposed a draft bill abolishing the Rp 1 Mill. Fiscal tax by 2010. The tax must be paid by all Indonesians and residents departing the country and is unpopular with Indonesians and  ASEAN, who say that it is an impediment to tourism. The abolition of this tax has been proposed many times before with nothing coming to fruition. As the song says ..... "Maybe This Time"

The sixty-seat turbo prop aircraft will be used on the lucrative (over priced) 100km, 20 min. A$90 return flights from Bali to Lombok. That's AUD .45 cents per kilometre double what Qantas will slug you on their most expensive route.

The old aviators adage is certainly the case with China's first civil turbo-prop jet aircraft which features comfortable four abreast seating for 60 passengers.
Comfortable Cabin for 60 PAX
The MA60 (Modern Ark 60) is powered by two USA Pratt & Whitney Canada PW-127J turboprops rated at 2,880-shp each and driving four-blade propellers and is equipped with advanced American Rockwell Collins avionics.

The MA60 aircraft will replace the Indonesian built CASA CN-235 aircraft and ageing Foker F-27's on many of Merpati's regional routes.

AirAsia 2008 SALE
BALI SEP 10: Early in the evening
we received a Google Alert email to say that AirAsia would be having a six day sale commencing Sept 11, at midnight with tickets as low as AUD 30 cents + taxes and charges.
We had already planned that we would like to visit the Philippines and also we have always wanted to go to Sandakan and Kota Kinabalu. At midnight we logged on to the AirAsia website to find it was down for maintenance, no doubt loading in the sale data. 01:00 we logged on again and started checking routes and prices.
We found that AA flew to Clark (Manila) either direct or via Kota Kinabalu, also noting they flew to Sandakan. I made a proposed itinerary, fiddling between my visa and date and the 30th of June, the latest fly date in sale period.
Then I hit a snag, sale price flights between Bali and Kuala Lumpur were few and far between. Finally we found if we take the night flight to Kuala Lumpur rather than our usual afternoon flight and returned on the 30th of June there was a reasonable discount.

SANDAKAN
From Kuala Lumpur we fly to Sandakan which was the former capital of British North Borneo and is known as the gateway for ecotourism destinations in Sabah.
Looking over Sandakan City
The area is also infamous as the site of a World War II Japanese airfield, built by the forced labour of 6,000 Javanese civilians and Allied prisoners of war. In 1945 the surviving prisoners were sent on the Sandakan Death Marches, only about ten of them survived the war.
We will roughly follow their march on  our six hour bus trip from Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu.
KOTA KINABALU
Kota Kinabalu, formerly known as Jesselton, is the capital of Sabah . Located on the northwest coast of Borneo facing the South China Sea. Kota Kinabalu sprawls for kilometres along the coast. Kinabalu National Park is located about 90 kilometres
from the city, and besides this, it also features a number of tourist attractions in and around the city and is a major industrial and commercial centre in East Malaysia.
MANILA
Manila is the capital of the Philippines and is located on the eastern shore of Manila Bay on Luzon island. In the 16th century, Manila grew from an Islamic settlement into the seat of the colonial government of Spain when it controlled the Philippine Islands for over three centuries from 1565 to 1898. In 1898, the United States occupied and controlled the city and the Philippine archipelago until 1946. During World War II, much of the city was destroyed. Today, the city and the metropolis thrive as an important cultural and economic centre. However, overpopulation, traffic congestion, pollution, and crime challenge the city.
All will make interesting reading in future editions of the KHO News.

BALI: Bananas come in all sizes from the imported Cavandish and the local, much smaller and sweeter finger bananas are grown all over the island - seems any spare plot of land not needed for a year is used.
Banana plant beside the KHO
What's in a Name
The name "banana" is derived from the Arabic word for "finger". The Indonesian word for banana is PISANG. Indonesians like their Pisang fried - Pisang Goreng is a local favourite - nice with ice-cream.
Native of Malaysia
Bananas are believed to be native to Malaysia. The banana is mentioned for the first time in history in Buddhist texts of 600  BC. By 200AD organized banana plantations could be found in China.
Then in 650 AD, Islamic conquerors brought the banana back to Palestine, which could explain a lot. The Arabic merchants finally spread the bananas all over Africa, and in 1502 the Portuguese started the first banana plantations in the Caribbean and in Central America.
Not a Tree
The banana plant is not a tree, but a giant herb of the same family as lilies, orchids and palms. There are about 400 varieties of bananas.
The rhizome (bulb) is planted and gives a first shoot in 3 or 4 weeks.
After 9 to 10 months the  foliage has a diameter that can be as large as 7 meters. A bud appears on the plant, 5 days later it turns red and starts opening. Two days later the leaves that covered it are falling down and finally two days later you can
Bananas always grow upwards
already see the first banana hands. The trunk of a banana plant is made of sheaths of overlapping leaves, tightly wrapped around each other like stalks in a celery bunch. Each banana stem consists of 10 to 14 hands each of them carrying from 18 to 20 bananas.
Why Bananas
are Good For You
Containing three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fibre, a banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost
of energy. Just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90 minute workout.
No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes. A banana can also help us keep fit and help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses. A recent survey amongst people suffering from depression showed, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax and improve your mood.

Yudhoyono speaks in Melbourne
MELBOURNE, Indonesia's President has made an extraordinary appeal for Indonesians and Australians to look beyond the "tyranny of stereotypes" and make full use of the opportunities in each other's countries. Speaking in English and cutting the usual policy laden material of presidential speeches, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono
celebrated his 58th birthday on Sunday night Sep 9 at a dinner launching a new series of "future leader" dialogues among young people from the Asia-Pacific region, run by Melbourne University's Asialink program. The President had been in Australia to attend the APEC summit. The President spoke warmly of Australia's help during Indonesian emergencies and individuals known among ,
Indonesians including the late Steve Irwin, killed by a stingray while filming on the Barrier Reef last year.
inconsolable at the death of Steve Irwin, that loveable, cheerful and nature-loving Australian," President Yudhoyono said. "We loved him and treasure his legacy. I want to stress that we are talking of a real flesh and blood individuals with extraordinary human qualities not stereotypes. They are the ones who matter." He hit out at "populist politicians and a few sensationalist
members of mass media on both sides" who created suspicions, prejudice and false stereotypes. President Yudhoyono said the Bali bombers had been mistaken if they thought they could drive a wedge between the two peoples.
A big reservoir of goodwill remained among Indonesians towards Australians.
"Hence, I urge Australians to come to Indonesia and make it your second home,
he said. "I want to see more Australians travel, play, rest, study, research, and make new friends in Indonesia. "Those who are interested in Asian studies can make Indonesia their gateway to deeper knowledge.
To the artists among you, come to Bali and find out how the artists of Europe found the fullest expression of their soul on that island paradise. To the entrepreneurs, come and avail yourselves of our latest package of investment incentives." Mentioning that his own son, Edhie Baskoro, was a graduate of Perth's Curtin University of Technology, he said  development of Indonesia's  human resources owed a lot to Australian educational institutions.
Son Edhie Baskoro
"I would like more and more Indonesians to come and study here in Australia — by scores of thousands every year if possible," he said. "I should like more and more Indonesian businessmen to come here and look into opportunities in a strongly growing Australian economy, and find ways to strike up joint ventures that will also benefit Indonesia. "In sum, let us expand and intensify our people to people contacts in all fields, especially in trade and investment, and in culture and education."
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was in Australia to attend the APEC conference in Sydney, after the conference he visited Melbourne before returning to Indonesia.

BISNIS INDONESIA: President Bambang Susilo Yudhoyono has expressed the wish that the 250 hectare cultural park and monument Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) complex on Bali’s Ungasan peninsula can be finally complete by October 2008, in time for the World Cultural Festival planned in Bali.
Almost three times the size of New York's  Statue of Liberty
The Garuda Wisnu Kencana monument is to be 145 meters high when completed and will be visible from most of southern Bali and stand out like a beacon to landing

aircraft at  Bali's airport. Work on the GWK cultural park commenced in 2000 and was planned to be completed by 2005, however the economic mayhem of the two Bali bombs hampered progress. The President of Indonesia SBY, would
like the project finished by 2008, but many say 2010 will be closer.
THE LEGEND OF
GARUDA WISNU
Based on the tale, the Garuda eagle, the son of Goddess Winata, fought hard to get the Tirtha Amertha (water of eternal life) to free his mother from 1,000 dragons, the sons of Goddess Kadru, who had made his mother a slave. The Garuda eagle, accompanied by his parents' prayers, fought his best to beat the Gods in heaven to get the Tirtha Amertha, finally they made an agreement, that the Gods would hand over the Tirtha Amertha on one condition, that the Garuda eagle would serve God Wisnu. Garuda was very pleased with the offer because he knew that he would be able to free his mother. The Garuda eagle then took the Tirtha Amertha to the 1,000 dragons  and was able to free his mother. Then Garuda told the dragons, "You are all only allowed to drink the Tirtha Amertha after having a bath." The dragons soon went to bathe in the nearby river and left the water unattended, not realizing the water should never be left unattended. Finally, God Indra came and took the Tirtha Amertha and returned it to heaven.
